wsop main event on tv

espn began its coverage of the main event last night, airing the first two episodes of the series. i thought there was a chance that i would get a couple seconds of air time sitting next to varkonyi when he was all in on the flop and chris ferguson was in the tank thinking about the call.

apparently though, they separated the four starting days (Day 1a, 1b, 1c, and 1d) into 4 episodes, so maybe i'll be on next week on the third show. not that i'll have any of the focus whatsoever, but i was sitting at a table with two previous main event champions. i know i'm going to become famous from an anonymous 2.5 seconds of air time!

------------
thinking of playing the viejas ace of aces $300 tourney this saturday. the first levels are fine, but it becomes a turbo after about 5-6 levels with the blinds and antes doubling every level. if you don't catch some nice cards, you're done. i've done well at the live games there, so that might push me over the edge on whether to go.

-------------
i did a quick spreadsheet of my stats since Aug. 1 and they are on the high side of the variance curve to say the least! i've been running at the completely unsustainable rate of + 29 big blinds / hour over 65 hours of live play, sitting mostly at 2/3 NL. can it continue?

Good Job Jake! Remind me not to sit with you at Oceans 11: you are definitely on a hot streak that may be of reduced statistical significance after another 550% hours of play. It takes about 10,000 hands of play to determine if you are up/down or sideways or about 350 hours of live play.

I'd recommend keeping that spreadsheet going for the rest of the year. It's a valuable tool to help spot trends and so forth. Not to mention all the cool graphs and charts you can make with the sweet, sweet data.

will the charts and graphs tell me what to do with the bucketloads of money? hmmmmm?? will they???

Those charts look really cool when you play all year long a couple times a week and make a couple or few hundred bucks each time - THEN you hit the $8.5MM WSOP main event! It looks really sweet!

That I LOVE the Ocean's 11 casino?!

O'Neil has been pulling some crazy hours at Isis lately, but we scheduled an evening yesterday to meet up and roll up to Ocean's 11 for some poker and yuks. I made it up to his place in Encinitas around 6:45 PM, we had some cold Pacifico's and Raul's (I went with the standard chicken burrito, he had the #7 plate) on his phat deck while we shot the shit. We then hit the road and got to the casino around 8:00 PM. Bought in at the $2/$2 no-limit game for a hundy each. O'Neil is in seat 4 and I'm in seat 5.

O'Neil won a couple of smaller pots then proceeded to go to war, first starting off with a beautiful semi-bluff in a pot where he held middle pair and a diamond flush draw after the flop came out 10 high. He was heads-up with Lexus Hat, who acted first and checked. O'Neil then put out a substantial bet and was called. The turn brought a 6 of spades. Lexus Hat checked again, and O'Neil calmly went all-in. Lexus Hat goes into the tank for about three minutes, internally debating a call. He finally makes the call, turning over 10-7 for top pair, lousy kicker. O'Neil flips over the K-9 of diamonds, needing some help. The river 9 provides said help, and Lexus had is busted out. This puts O'Neil over $200 bucks. Lexus Hat proceeded to then buy in twice more for a hundred each time and blew through the cash, once on a semi-bluff flush draw all-in shove that he got called on, and once on a ridiculous call of an all-in where he was dead from the word "call". As he got up to leave for the evening, O'Neil nudged me and said, "He didn't have a good night."

We are then treated to the antics of the Asian Trio, who are seated immediately to my left. They had the gambling bug addiction that is prevalent in the Asian genetic makeup, where they would push all-in and call all-ins with absolute garbage ($47 dollar all-in pre-flop call holding the J-6? Sure.). It was hilarious, mostly due to the fact that the statistics were holding up and they were going broke repeatedly. But they were nothing compared to the black kid who joined out table, sitting in seat 3 to Pat's right. Holy shit.

This kid did not stop yapping the entire time, which was great, because he was actually entertaining in that he did not "get" poker too well, but loved to call all-ins. He won a huge pot to put himself over $300 chips, and then the following happened:

I don't remember the actual development and action sequence, but Giggly Asian went all-in for about $50 bucks. Black Kid calls, and O'Neil announces clearly to the dealer, "I'm all-in." I begin to party internally, I know he's got the aces. Black Kid thinks for about 3 seconds and calls. O'Neil says, "Thank you, Lord" and flips over the Aces. Giggly Asian doesn't even bother, but the Kid stands up and turns over the K-J offsuit! The dealer does the right thing, in fact, an ace comes out on the flop to cut the drama, the Giggly Asian tosses his hand into the muck, and the turn pairs the kid, who needs a queen on the river to make a straight, which he doesn't get, and O'Neil rakes a MONSTER fucking pot. He proceeds to stack chips for the next eight hands or so. Beautiful.

I lose a fair-sized pot, and start thinking about how I'm going to have to write about Pat's big night and the end to my winning streak. Decide: Fuck that. Buy in for another $50 to get my stack back up to 80 chips or thereabouts. Bluff Giggly Asian out of a hand to put myself over $100 bucks. Then, my salvation arrives in the form of what O'Neil called "A B-version Jay Smith" (BJS). A limped pot to me on the button, I look down at A-J of diamonds. Raise to 10, get two or three callers. Okay. Flop: A-6-4 rainbow, no fucking diamonds. BJS leads out for forty bucks, everyone folds to me. I put him on Ace-10 or thereabouts, conciously thinking, "He doesn't have A-K. He'll fold to a reraise." I announce, "All in." The kid is fairly shocked, but starts thinking it through. He stares at me, trying to get a read. I stare at the flopped cards. He says, "I have a big hand. Is this any good?" I look over and he's exposing an ace to me. So far, so good. I don't respond verbally, and go back to staring at the pot. He then says, "How 'bout this? How does this grab you?" I look over and he's exposing a king. Uh oh. I go back to pot gazing, and he thinks for another minute or so. Finally, he pushes in his chips for the call. I stand up, reaching to turn over my cards, and as I do, the dealer is already flipping over the turn card. It is the most beautiful Jack I've ever seen in my life. I say, "That was a really good call. I win." The river brings no king, and I rake a huge pot. I look at BJS and say, "That was a great call. I got very lucky there. I know it." Tip the dealer, then bust BJS to the felt with A-J two hands later when he goes all-in for his last eight bucks. It seemed like the right thing to do. He re-bought, and to his credit, didn't complain or bawl too much about the horrendous beat I just put on him.

We dick around in some smaller pots, waiting for a monster hand to go to war with the Black Kid. Basically, he'd call anything, so we're looking to get in there with a decent hand and make some more money. Finally, at 10:50 PM, it was time to go home.

Ultimately, I cashed out at a $135 dollar profit, and O'Neil cashed out at a $275 dollar profit. He also bought about $35 bucks in chips worth of beer and tips, so he definitely had a +$300 night. His ridiculous string of winning at Ocean's 11 continues.

We were laughing all the way back to Encinitas. It was the prototypical "great table", in that there were so many weak players and they were willing to get into pots and donk off cash. I should mention that the Black Kid was up over $500 bucks when we left. I don't know how much he bought in for over the evening, but man ... he gave a lot of action.

I love Ocean's 11 casino!

Jake, it was me blogging in your blog. Let's face it: you need the help. Usually, the software recognizes a jHc post, but in this case, it did it anonymously. Whatever. The people need some stories, and you need the traffic to this site. We'll work together on it.
